PHOTOS Exhaust Gas Recirculation „EGR” – is applied in modern vehicles with internal combustion engines. This is one of the systems designed to reduce air pollution produced by motor vehicles, and introduced in response to the increasingly stringent standards related to emissions of harmful components of exhaust gases. In addition to the incoming mixture of fuel and air, the system recirculates a portion of exhaust gas into the combustion chamber of the drive unit. The practice shows however that the method is not sufficiently effective, because the amount of exhaust gases used in the combustion chamber is strictly specified and depends on the operating load of the engine. In the case of spark ignition engines this is approx. 15-25% of the volume of exhaust gas at the temperature of 650oC, while in diesel engines approx. 30-45% of the volume of exhaust gas at the temperature of approx. 450oC, due to which it is necessary to install additional exhaust gas cooler. The remaining exhaust gases are released into and pollute the atmosphere. The most common reason for using a ready-made cap for EGR valve is an existing problem with our car, which suggests there is a damage. Typical symptoms include loss of original power, jerking movement and smoke during acceleration, and oscillating engine movements. Quite often a visit to a mechanic’s shop with a patient presenting with the above symptoms ends with a diagnosis “damaged EGR valve”. In such situation we have three options: Replace the valve with a new one; Clean the valve, because the failure most frequently is caused by dirt resulting from deposit of carbon residue. Yet, we have to remember that this process will have to be frequently repeated because after it has been cleaned once, the valve will accumulate dirt more easily; Install EGR cap to prevent exhaust gas from getting into the inlet manifold. As a result of this the above symptoms of EGR valve damage frequently disappear and the car regains the parameters from the time before the failure.
